TPO – The super-tall skyscraper – Landmark 81, with a height of 461.3 meters (1,514ft), is one of the top tallest buildings in the world built by Vietnamese people. In this project, Vietnam’s General Contractor, Coteccons, has proved its capacity to the owner of VinGroup, surpassing the Korean contractors Lotte and SsangYong to win the Landmark 81 project.
Overview of Landmark 81
Mr. Nguyen Viet Quang – Vice Chairman and General Director of Vingroup said: When starting to build Vinhomes Central Park, the investor expects Vinhomes Central Park will not only be a complex urban area but also a symbol of Ho Chi Minh City’s dynamic development. Therefore, at the center of the project, Landmark 81 – the tallest building in Vietnam and among the tallest buildings in the world has been successfully conceived and built. This 461.3m tall-building is an architectural masterpiece created by world-renowned construction designs and supervision contractors such as Mace (England), Atkins (England), Arup (Hong Kong), and Aurecon (Australia).
Landmark 81 Building is inspired by Vietnam’s traditional bamboo bundle with undulating peaks shaped soaring, rising to the sky, mingling with other buildings of Vinhomes Central Park urban area and forming a magnificent architectural ensemble along the Saigon River.
Not only is the building with the highest record height ever in Vietnam, Landmark 81 also represents the power to reach the sky, symbolizing the Vietnamese aspirations of reaching the world, bringing the message of a city full of desire and inner power.
When putting in operation, Landmark 81 residents can experience the upscale life in the sky bar, cigar lounge and 360 observatory, overlooking the romance of Saigon River and the panoramic view of the vibrant city.
In 2014, Vingroup offered public bidding for Landmark 81, Coteccons was one of the participating units that year. At that time, Coteccons had no experience in building tall buildings over 60 floors, however, this was the largest project of Coteccons so far, so they had asked for the support from Obayashi Corporation(Japan).
In the final round of bidding, 3 remaining representatives were Coteccons (Vietnam), Lotte and SsangYong (Korea). In the end, Coteccons overcame two Korean contractors to win the Landmark 81 project.
This is a public and transparent bidding, Coteccons won the bid because they have proven their ability to carry out this project. Vingroup is also very proud when the winning unit is a contractor from Vietnam because Landmark 81 is a project that made up by Vietnamese people.
As an 81-storey building, the tallest in Vietnam and among the tallest buildings in the world, the construction of Landmark 81 has been a big challenge for the construction team. In Vietnam, there are no standards for constructing high buildings, especially specific solutions for issues such as wind load, earthquake, heat radiation, lift system, power supply for electricity and water. Therefore, the Investor had to set his own construction standard, conduct a wind tunnel experiment, work closely with international consultants such as Atkins (landscape consultant), Mace (construction supervision), Arup (structural consultancy and fire protection), Aurecon (mechanical and electrical consultancy and exterior design).
Vertical transportation arrangements also require careful consideration to meet its safety, traffic and efficiency. At Landmark 81, Investor applies GOS of EUROCONS to calculate the number of elevators as well as operating system to maximize efficiency. Residents only take a maximum of 60 seconds to wait for stairs on any floor. To electricity, Vingroup has set floors 21, 46, 64, 78 and half of the 5th floor as technical floors, divided into 6 separate management areas.
In addition, Vingroup also decided to apply Eurocode standards 2, 3, 4, 8 to assess the natural impact and risks of 81-storey high building construction and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards of United States for this project.

Not only is a city’s symbol, when building Landmark 81, Vingroup Group also focused on ensuring benefits for investors and providing each urban resident with perfect living environment. Besides, Landmark 81 is also known as an environmentally friendly building. The entire tower uses glass for the exterior as Low-E glass – an architectural accent glass with advanced features such as light transmission, heat regulation to minimize power consumption, prevent UV radiation, help room flooded with light but still ensure cool with a stable temperature.
In the future, the Group always strives to bring high-class works that contribute to the overall development of the country. Like other projects of Vingroup, Landmark 81 is managed and operated by Vinhomes Joint Stock Company which is a member company of the Group.
“This buildings achieve a very impressive safety time – up to 9 million hours. You have shown me the youth, the stature of Vietnamese people is not inferior to any other country, including the world powers, ”said Wayne Harris, a British safety expert.
“For the tunnel section, Coteccons has proven its ability in tunneling measures. (To build this record foundation, Coteccons must apply the most advanced construction methods in the world to ensure the 21-meter deep excavation in the common basement population of 3.5 hectares. At the same time, Coteccons has applied many bright solutions to implement 17,000 m3 of concrete in a total of 41 hours). It is one of the factors that create trust with the Investor, Consulting when the Coteccons continues to be selected for body construction.
As soon as the developer decided to choose Coteccons to carry out the project body, we thought nothing else but together determined to give our best to complete the mission.
Anxiety, stress, pressure, challenge, and pride still lingers in our feeling. ”said the representative of Coteccons
